1, What does a typical day look like in this career? Very busy. The day starts out checking the
brokers phone messages and emails. Next she catches up on any real estate paperwork such
as files, disclosures ect... returns calls. Next is to check that any files the agents have going
have been checked and signed off. When the real estate tasks are completed she then goes to
the other desk to start work on her bookkeeping. This entails her receiving and processing the
checks that come in for the rentals they have(42 total). Calling and dealing with tenants that
are late and finally dealing with the bills for the rental properties and making sure all vendors
are paid in a timely manner.
2. Describe the workplace environment (building, office space, fieldwork, amount of people,
roles of employees, etc.) Her office is actually inside the brokers house and there are no other
“employees”, the agents all work out of their homes and email updates. They only come in to
drop off their files.
3. What are some facts you learned that you were unaware of prior to the job shadow? I really
did not realize how stressful it can get when you are the only person taking care of
everything in the office.
4, Which aspects of this career are appealing to you? Explain: The challenging part of making
sure the real estate part and the property management part do not eross,
5. Which aspects of this career are not appealing to you? Explain: Sitting at a desk all day. I
need to move around. Also, the studying. In order to be an office manager for a real estate
company you have to get your RE license. Unless you have that you cannot answer any
questions about real estate.
6. What aspects of this career seem like a natural fit with your abilities and personality?
Explain: The only part about this career that can really ft is that you need to do a lot of
multitasking and that is what I like to do. It is challenging.
7. What would you need to do to prepare for a job in this field in the next five years according
to the person you shadowed? Study and pass the Real Estate exam for my license, study and
understand the aspects of property management and be actively doing real estate for a
minimum of 4yrs.
8. How has this job shadow experience influenced your career goals? I know without a doubt
that I can never have a career that just keeps me tied to a desk.
