Monastery Arnota

Built by Matei Basarab in 1633-1634 , dedicated to " Holy Archangels


Michael and Gabriel" , on the foundation of an older church , located 37 km
from Rm . Valcea , near Bistrita Monastery at an altitude of 800 m. According to
a legend Matei Basarab built the monastery here since before becoming King ,
had found refuge in these places , hiding in some bushes , being chased by the
Turks.
Matei Basarab raised around the church and buildings or monks and
monastery bell tower at the entrance . In 1934 they were also built some cells
that exist today, one being arranged a small museum in the monastery treasures
were displayed , and between 1954 to 1958 has been reinforced and the entire
monastic settlement were introduced plants water and heating.
Legend says Matei Basarab , being pursued by the Turks took refuge on
a mountain plateau where there is a mountain lake whit long brake, owing to the
fact that the place is on the south side enjoying much sun. Around the lake there
were ruins of churches and Matei Basarab decided that if he escape, will
founded a monastery.
Monastery Arnota it denotes the special historical and outstanding
heritage value. Church (with the church of the Monastery Plataresti, jud.
Calarasi) keep in original form the murals picture.

This beautiful monastery by painting, architecture and sculpture can be


considered one of the most representative historical and religious art in the
country.
After 1999 Arnota became convent.
