Adding or Creating Devices

Overview
This procedure explains how to add or create Symmetrix devices, and includes instructions for
z/OS.

Done

Note: If the Symmetrix array already contains the device types that you are attempting to
add/create, use the Duplicate Device option (see the SMC online help). This procedure
describes how to create a regular device from scratch.
This procedure is based on content from the SMC online help.
1.

Log in to the Symmetrix Management Console


From a Management Server, open a Web browser and point it to the following url:
http://localhost:7070
You should see the EMC Symmetrix Management Console login screen, which looks
something like this:

Enter the appropriate user name in the User Name field and the corresponding password in
the Password field. When finished, left-click Login to complete the login process.

Open the Create Device dialog


Using the Navigation tree of the Symmetrix Management Console, right-click on the object
representing your Symmetrix array and select Device Configuration, Create Device from
the menus presented. (Refer to the following screen.)

Create a new devices


When the Device Configuration Create Device dialog is presented, perform the following
tasks in the order shown:

a) Enter the number of regular devices you want to create in the Number of Devices
field.
b) Select the desired device configuration from the drop-down list provided with the
Configuration field. (The selection made determines which remaining fields on the
Device Configuration Create Device dialog are enabled.)
Note: For help in determining the appropriate configuration type to use, refer to the
EMC Solutions Enabler Symmetrix Array Controls CLI Product Guide or the Mirror
Device Protection table in the SMC online help.
c) If creating RAID 5 or RAID 6 devices on a Symmetrix array with Enginuity Version
5772 or higher, select the appropriate number of data members to use from the dropdown list provided with the Data Member Count field.
d) Select the desired emulation from the drop-down list provided with the Emulation field.
(The selection made determines which remaining fields on the Device Configuration
Create Device dialog are enabled.)
e) Select the desired capacity for the new device(s) from the drop-down list provided with
the Capacity field.
Note: For help with specifying the size of AS/400 devices, refer to the EMC Solutions
Enabler Symmetrix Array Controls CLI Product Guide or the AS/400 device meta size
tables in the SMC online help.
f)

Select the desired disk group number from the drop-down list provided with the Disk
Group Number field. (If the default value, Any Available Disk, is used, the location of

the new devices is not restricted to a specific set of defined disks.)


g) Left-click Add to Config Session List to queue the task needed to create the desired
device(s) and exit the Device Configuration Create Device dialog.

When the Add to Config Session List button is selected, the Config Session screen should
appear and the task to create the desired devices should be displayed on the My Active Tasks
page.
Commit the configuration change
If the Config Session screen is not automatically displayed, left-click on the object
representing your Symmetrix array (using the Navigation tree of the Symmetrix Management
Console) and then left-click the Config Session tab. Verify that the task to create the desired
devices is displayed on the My Active Tasks page. Left-click Commit All to execute the task
and commit the results. (Refer to the following screen.)

When asked whether or not to continue, left-click Yes and wait for the process to complete.
This will create the desired devices.

Verify that the desired devices were created


Left-click the Devices object under the Symmetrix object where the devices were created and
examine the Properties information displayed. The devices that were just created should be
displayed at the bottom of the list produced.
