Climate Analysis
Activity: Through submission to the IRB, I was able to conduct a Climate Analysis of my
school. I gave my colleagues a survey to complete to identify strengths and weaknesses of our
school, staff and administration.
Description: After gaining permission from my administration, I was able to proceed with
conducting the Climate Analysis with my colleagues. Being that my school is vastly large, I
placed the survey in the teachers boxes and requested that they return them to my mailbox or to
me. Their information was kept extremely confidential. My principal also requested a copy of the
findings when I completed them.
a. What went well?
The distribution of the survey went smoothly because I put them in the teachers boxes.
Everyone was really receptive to the idea of completing them. The most successful area
of the school to complete them was the Freshman Academy because I am in that
academy. I had everyone turn them back in from that academy and approximately sixty
percent of the remaining parts of the school turned them back in as well.
b. What did not?
The area that did not go very well was the participation. There was approximately forty
percent of the faculty who did not participate in the survey or did not return it to me. I do
not know if this really applies to the reflection aspect; however, the results in reference to
administrative support did not go as well as planned when I have to turn in the
information to my administrator.
c. Given the chance to do it again, how would you do it better?
If I had to give this Climate Analysis survey again, I would make it a point to also go
around to each academys plan center during lunch to discuss in detail what this was

about and answer any questions anyone may have had. I think, no I know, that teachers
are bombarded with surveys and reflection forms from every professional development
session or faculty meeting. Therefore, I needed to be more available to everyone so they
would know and understand that their opinions were valued, and that this was not just
another formality to complete.
