How to Setup a Basic PA Sound System

Introduction:
The following steps are instructions on how to setup a basic PA sound system. A typical
PA system has two speakers, a microphone, and music to play. Basic knowledge of terminology
and AV skills are recommended for this setup, but are not required. Average time of completion:
15-30 minutes.

Equipment Needed:

2 Portable Speakers w/ Speaker Stands


Mini Mackie Sound Board
3 Power Cables
4 XLR Cables
2 Male XLR to 1/4 Cable
1/4" to 1/8" Cable
DI Box
Wired Mic
Music Source

Basic Setup Instructions


1. Place the speakers on the stands in appropriate setting

2. Power the speakers and set them to unity (U). Do NOT turn them on yet.

3. Place the sound board in an appropriate location and power it. Do NOT turn them
on yet.

4. Plug each male XLR to 1/4 into the female side of the XLR cables.

5. Run cables
a. 1/4 XLR from L board output to L speaker input

b. 1/4 XLR from R board output to R speaker input

6. Plug mic into XLR cable. Plug the other end of the XLR into one of the board
inputs.

7. Plug XLR cable into DI box. Plug the other end of the XLR into the other board
input.

8. Plug 1/4" to 1/8" cable into DI box.

9. Input music source and turn the volume to its max.

10. Power the soundboard and speakers. Warning: Be sure all levels on the
soundboard are brought down.

11. Adjust levels


a. Bring the master volume to unity (U)
b. Adjust DI box gain to unity and adjust the volume appropriately
c. Adjust mic gain and volume appropriately

12. Do a sound check. Adjust levels accordingly.

Troubleshooting

If no sound is coming through:


check if everything is powered
check is all cords are plugged into their correct positions

check if the inputs on the board are muted or not


If there is a lot of feedback:
adjust the gain
check if all cables are in working condition
check if the speakers are in working condition

Warning/Caution
Never power speakers if auto is currently being sent.
Avoid unplugging inputs if the levels are still up.
When powering on the soundboard, make sure all levels are down. If levels are
too high it could blow out the speakers.
Never bring the mic in front of the speakers if it is powered.
