EXPLANATORY NOTE.
The P'ing Tse Pien, literally, Book of the Tones, smooth and otherwise, is a new edition
of the Peking Syllabary appended to the " Hsin Ching Lu," or Book of Experiments, published
in 1859.
The

To use
it
the student
the Sound Table immediately following, which prescribes the Syllabic differences recognised
in the Dialect.
In the Second Table he will find, under each Syllable, the characters held
by speakers of the Dialect to belong to the same Sound, distributed in four columns (numbered
Of these, Column i contains the characters in the first, or shang-p'ing,
respectively r, 2, 3, 4).
Tone Column 2, those in the hsia-p'ing ; Column 3, those in the shang ; and Column 4, those

Characters that have more than one Sound or Tone are pointed with a small
circle on their right and the Third Table repeats the whole of those so pointed in such form
in the ck'u.
that the student referring to it will see at a glance to what changes any word in it is either
syllabically or tonically liable.
Throughout the Second Table the aspirated stand side by side
with the unaspirated Syllables, and the characters under either or both having a common
phonetic are, so far as circumstances will admit of it, aligned with each other, either singly or in
groups. By examination of these groups, the student will refresh his memory, not more in the
