CHAPTER IV

BASIC APPROACH OF MILLING

After we know technically the composition of sugar cane, that is raw material for the milling,
then it is now come to the basic approach of milling and its mass flow from a mill unit 4) outlined
below:
cane

bagasse

mixed juice

The formula of continuity:

input = output
At the input portion, for mill#1 is cane, or bagasse for the following mill units.
Let

Gm = the weight, and

Vm = the volume (no-void)

At the output portion, there are juice (extracted) and bagasse.

Say

Gnp = the weight of extracted juice

Vnp = the volume of extracted juice

For the bagasse

Ga = the weight, and

Va = the volume (no-void);

Hence

Gm = Gnp + Ga ........................................................................... (1)

Furthermore, if

dm = cane / bagasse density (no-void) at the input portion

dnp = density of extracted juice, and
da

then

= density of bagasse (no-void) at the output portion

Gm = dm x Vm
Gnp = dnp x Vnp

and

4)

Ga = da x Va

Because cane / bagasse at the input portion is considered to consist of juice and fiber as
mentioned in Chapter II, and if:
Gnm = the weight of juice contain in cane / bagasse
Vnm = the volume of juice contain in cane / bagasse
and

Gs = the weight of fiber

Vs = the volume of fiber (no-void);

then

Gm = Gnm + Gs .......................................................................... (2)

Furthermore, if:
dnm = density of juice containing the input portion, and
ds

= density of fiber (no-void)

then

Gnm = dnm x Vnm

and

Gs = ds x Vs

The identical condition applies to the output portion, that bagasse is considered to consist of
juice and fiber (see Chapter II), then if:
Gna = weight of juice in bagasse
Vna = volume of juice in bagasse
Gs = weight of fiber, and
Vs = volume of fiber (no-void), as mentioned above,
And so

Ga = Gna + Gs ............................................................................ (3)

It is understood that the weight of fiber (Gs) at the input portion as well as at the output portion
{see equation (2) and equation (3)}, have the same value (without loss). And so the value of its
no-void fiber volume (Vs).
It is then also understood throughout the tandem in every mill, that the weight and the no-void
volume of fiber each have the same respective value.
