Chapter 3: Methodology

3.1 Questionnaire & Annual Reports

For the purpose of collecting merchant banking data, I developed a questionnaire/data collection sheet
which is close ended and consists of yearly data of the different merchant banks performance in terms of
Issue Management, Underwriting, Portfolio Management etc. The questionnaire was submitted to 2 of the
renowned merchant banks of Bangladesh for getting an idea about the Merchant banking industry & their
practices. I also went through to the annual reports of concerned organizations to collect data about their
performances.

3.2 Interview with the Merchant Bank CEOs

While collecting data from the merchant banks, I also interviewed the CEO of LankaBangla Investments
Limited & IDLC Investments Limited. During the interview I tried to get an idea about their mindset
regarding their operation in the market. I also asked them about how they are dealing with the sick
accounts with margin loans after the debacle of 2011.

3.3 Website Data
I also browsed numerous websites for collecting data about the investment banking operation throughout
the world as well as in Bangladesh. In order to analyze the performance of the merchant banks, I also

looked in various newspaper articles published in the recent days which gave me an idea about the
coming days in such industry as well. It also helped me to find various loopholes & problems the
countrys merchant banking industry is currently dealing with.

3.4 Microsoft Excel Analysis

After accumulating data from different sources, I tried to put all the numeric data in Microsoft Excel for a
scenario & trend analysis about the future days in the merchant banking industry. This gave me an idea
about the future of investment banking in the country.
