1. What disaster occurred here?

Two typhoons, one land slide of garbage and mud collapsed on a shanty town killing more
than 200 people.

2. What incident caused the smoke in the photograph?

They set a fire to the rotting garbage for it to be easier to find bodies under there.
3. Why are houses located in a rubbish dump?

Because the people there are to poor to afford a house or apartment and they work at the
dump site so they live there.

4. What do the local people called the site and why?

the Squatters colony is referred to as Lupang Pangako the promised land be the locals, It

tracks unemployed and homeless people with the promise of turning the rubbish in to quick
cash.

5. What materials are used on the roofs shown in the foreground? why do you think they
differ from those in the background?

The materials in the foreground look like they are made of the trash at the site so card

board and plastics etc. The may differ in the background because thats where the richer
people may live.

6. What is the backhoe doing? why was rescue work at the site delayed?

When the land slide happened the backhoe was there to clear the area so they could look

for any bodies or survivors. The rescue was delayed because of electrical lines that where
knocked down and firers starting because the methane gases being let out by the rubbish.
7. What could be done to better manage the environment of this site?

By blocking off the areas that are on fire and have areas that are just for recyclable

rubbish and having people to make these placers safer for the poor to work and live in.

Rubbish such as metal cans, plastic bottles, card board and paper.
Why did families work at smokey mountain?

So they can pay for food and water so they can live.
Why was it called smokey mountain?

Because of the methane gases from the rotting garbage would start firers and create
smoke.

How did smokey mountain become a symbol of poverty for the region?

Photos of bear foot kids walking and sorting through the rubbish in magazines shocked
many people.

What action did the government take? how successful was their action?

The government flattened smokey mountain and built buildings on top of it. the government
was very successful at this.
