a) What disaster occurred here?:
There was two typhoons and a landslide of garbage and mud.

b) What Incident caused the smoke in the photo?:


The landslide knocked down electrical cables whitest fire to garbage which
caused the smoke.

c) Why are houses located in a rubbish dumb?:


Because people in Manila don't have enough money to afford to buy a house
anywhere else.

d) What do the local people call the dumpsite and why?:


The dumpsite is referred to by the locals The Promised Land as its attracts
unemployed and homeless Filipinos with the promise of turning the collected
waste into trash.

e) What materials are used for the roofs shown in the foreground.
Why do you think they differ from those in the background?:
They build their houses out of flimsy materials that they find such as
cardboard and plastics

f) What is the backhoe doing? Why was there a rescue work at


the site delayed?:
The backhoe is used to push rubbish out of the way to make paths and roads
for the locals of the dumpsite. The workers were delayed because of the
Typhoons and the Landslide.
g) What could be done to better manage the environment of this site?:
Having laws for the people of the dumpsite and to have better housing areas
and for the rubbish to be played out not piled up, and for a underground area
in case of more typhoons so the people have somewhere to go and be safe.

Look carefully at the photograph of smokey mountain dump near
Manila.
a) What are the children in the photograph doing?:
The kids in the photo are looking through rubbish trying to find food, water or
materials to sell to make money or to rebuild there houses or huts.

b) What was collected at the smokey mountain site?:


Food to eat anything you can wear or something that can be recycled and
sold for money.

c) Why did families work at the smokey mountain site?:


They worked at the smokey mountain dumpsite because they had no where
else to work because no one would give them a job and its close to home for
them as they cant really afford to live any where else.

d) Why is it called smokey mountain?:


Smokey Mountain got its name from having piles of rubbish being stories high
and sent off clouds from the methanes that erupted in the rotting garbage.

e) How did smokey mountain become a symbol of poverty for the


region?:
There was a magazine and story on Smokey Mountain dumpsite and it
showed children picking through rubbish bare footed and it was a continuous
reminder of the difference between the rich and the poor.

f)What action did the government take? How successful was


their action.
The garbage dump was bulldozed flattened and transformed into a new urban
community. The shabby houses were replaced with with new permanent
buildings. I don't really think hats a good idea as the poor would have to
relocate as they couldnt live in the buildings as they wouldnt be able to afford
living there. So I believe that the government only listen to the rich and forgot
about the poor which is pretty unfair.

Question 3:
Imagine you are a waste picker living in one of the garbage
dumps near Manila. Create a rubbish project from clean rubbish
to sell at a market. First make a sketch of your project, then
gather clean waste material from home to construct it.
