TheCelestialSphere

Itisaveryknownfactthattheglobeisjustamodeloftheearthwithlandforms,oceans,
theequator,thepoles,andmore.Theglobeforourearthconsistsofmanydifferentthingsand
helpsusgetabetterideaofwhatourearthlookslikeandhowitworks.But,thereisalsoa
certaintypeofglobethatastronomersuseknownasTheCelestialSphere.Somemaydefinethis
asthenightskypaintedontoaglobe.TheCelestialSphereistheimaginarysphereonwhich
objectsintheskyappeartoresidewhenobservedfromEarth.(glossaryoftextbook)This
includesmanystarsandobjectsthatlookliketheycanallfitontheCelestialSpherewhenreally
theycanbeveryfarapartfromoneanother.
ThemainobjectsontheCelestialSphereisquitesimilartotheregularglobe.Thereisa
celestialequator,locatedinthecenterofthesphere,horizontally,themeridian,locatedatthe
centerofthesphere,vertically,thecelestialnorthandsouthpoles,theecliptic,andallofthestars
thatappeartolieonit.Alloftheseitemsareessentialtomakingupthecelestialsphereandthis
modelhelpsastronomersunderstandthewaytheuniverseisreactingaroundus.
Thecelestialsphereisveryintriguingandhelpsunderstanddifferentinformation.The
northcelestialpoleislocateddirectlyabovetheNorthPole,samewiththesouthcelestialpole
andtheSouthPole.Thecelestialequatordividestheearthsskyinhalftorepresentboth
hemispheresinthesky.Themostdifficultprojectionofthecelestialspheretounderstandiswhat
iscalledtheecliptic.TheeclipticisthepaththeSunfollowsasitappearstocirclearoundthe
celestialsphereonceeachyear.(pg26)Meaningitistheplainofthesunsequatorprojected
ontotheEarth.Theseallmakeupthismodel.
Inmyopinion,thecelestialsphereisverybeneficialwhenlearningabouttherelativityof
theearthandwhatisbeyonditandithelpsgetabetterunderstandingofEarthsastronomical
surroundings.IfindthisconceptveryfascinatingandexcitingbecauseIlovelearningaboutthe

waywecanlocateourselvesandwhatisbeyondtheearthjustbyusingstars,theSunsecliptic
andeverythingelsethatmakesupthisbeautifulandbrilliantcelestialsphere.
