thereforethecriteriaastowhatis,andisnot,anexpressionof
poweropenedanewdebateaboutgenderrelationsthatfeeds
directlyintopay
manysuccessfulpeople,intermsofcareersuccess,arefrequently
lonelyandatconsiderableriskinotherways:
Byreconceptualisingpowerascontroloverourownlives,wecan
askquestionsthatillustratethelimitationsofourtraditionalview
ofpowerasstatus,incomeandcontroloverothers.Doesa
companypresidentwhohasneverknownhowtobeintimatehave
power?DoesathirteenyearoldOlympicgymnastwhohasnever
knownwhethersheislovedforherselforforhowsheperforms
havepower?Doesaboywhomustregisterforthedraftat
eighteenandisshotthroughthefaceinVietnam

Farrellarguesthatpoweristheabilitytocontrollifechoicesrather
thantheabilitytoearnhighpayandachievepublicstatus.This
perspectivearoseafterlisteningtosuccessfulpeople(usually
men)talkabouttheirsenseofpowerlessness,andarealisationthat
havepower?Doesabeautifulwomanwhomarriesadoctorhave
power,whensheneverdiscoversherowntalents?Whichofthese
peoplehavepoweroverhisorherownlife?

rewards,interpersonalcontactandsexualfulfilmentonapar
withexternalrewardsinunderstandingthelandscapeofpower.It
alsomakesitpossibletotheorisethatapersonsocialisedtoearn
income,possessionsandstatusthattheydonotneedordesire(to
fulfilthedesiresofanother)isdisempoweredratherthan
empowered.Farrellspositiondrew(andcontinuestodraw)onthe
feministtraditionbyembracingthegoalofemancipationfromsex
rolescombinedwithgreatersexualfreedom.Hisfindingsfrom
