The Soul of the Indian by Charles A. Eastman

Summary
Although some would think that two religions couldnt be more different
than Christianity/Catholicism and the beliefs of Native Americans, if you get down
to the core they are more similar than one may assume. In The Soul of the
Indian by Charles Alexander Eastman (Sioux), he gives the reader in-depth
insight into the nuances of Native American belief and spirituality. The author
states There is no such thing as a Christian civilization, The United States is a
country of diversity, accepting people of all raices and creeds, although it was not
originally so accepting of those who were different it has since made positive
change. The country makes effort to separate church and state and supports
those who practice different religions. Though the founders of our country may
have been Christian/catholic that does not make America a Christian
civilization. Eastman shares his opinion that he believes that Christianity and
modern civilization are opposed and irreconcilable. Because of the mass
diversity that makes up the population of the United States there could not
possibly be an assimilation of the two. Even if Christianity was the dominant
religion, to incorporate it into society would alienate too many Americans across
the nation. The little that religion has already crept into our government is in

constant debate and could be changed at any moment. The United States pledge
of allegiance states One nation, under god.., this statement alone has made
several Americans uncomfortable and sometimes even unwilling to perform the
pledge. Finally the author in closing states The spirit of Christianity and of our
ancient religion is essentially the same. Both religions are built on faith, believing
in the miracles written in their texts, whether one worships the sun or a cross,
they both believe in a higher power.
