Welcoming Changes 08 The most awaited socio-cultural spring fest is back.. © IIT Roorkee 13™- 15™ MARCH 2015 Revealing the Uncertainity The future of undergraduate courses running from our: ‘campus is uncertain. Yes, there may not be any further admissions to our campus through the prestigious IIT JEE. The cultural heritage of DPT is at risk of becoming obsolete. for the campus will be used primarily as a Research and Development Center by the institute should the director decide to close the courses. For fifty long years DPT has epitomized excellence, renowned for producing competent. students who excel in whatever field they choose to make a career in. Some of our seniors made it to the coveted IIMs ‘and many others cleared UPSC examination with flying, colours, cementing DPTs position in the upper strata of Indian colleges. Undergraduate students of our campus have represented and brought unparalleled glory to lIT Roorkee over the years and will continue to do so in the near future since there is no dearth of talent. ‘The absence of ‘fuchchas’ will have its own pros and cons. ‘The sad demise of the various clubs that are running in the ‘campus would be an inevitable consequence of a lack of undergraduate students as post graduate students hardly have any time for and seldom take part in extracurricular activities. There would be no MAPC, Literary club, Photography section or Electronics and Robotics club in two _ fr three years from now. Neither would there be any cultural fests such as Rhapsody or alumni meets such as Lamhe. Events such as Bhawan's day, Music and Dance nights that have hitherto been organized with great enthusiasm and entertained the DPT junta through enthralling performances, will not be celebrated or organized. There will be no students to carry out experiments in the laboratories that contain expensive equipment and machines. Many rooms will remain vacant in the two hostels should there be no intake of students. ‘The irony is that now that the campus has state of the art Basketball and Tennis courts, there may not be enough students to avail these facilities. The one good thing perhaps it will do is put an end to the incessant calls for campus change by the students. Without undergraduate students our campus won't be the same. The money that has been spent on the campus in the last few years will all go waste and the campus will ‘eventually become a liability to the institute, An influx of students is required to maintain the high standards that this campus has set for itself. If that does not happen, it will surely signal the end of an era. Srrictiy For ngineers Dees preter Sr ee ree orien ars To the optimist, the glass is halull To the pessimist, the glass is half-empty. Page 3 Life at Saharanpur campus is..aaan....easy and at the same time rewarding too. The recent developments in the team structure of the cultural council team. ensure that almost everyone in the campus has a nice little certificate to decorate their resume with. In fact almost ninety five percent of the students who gave the cultural interviews were gifted the opportunity to showcase their talents and exhi leadership sills in their respective fields (pun intended). For conducting barely and merely four events a year, a council team comprising of fifteen students has been formed. Now, is this a blessing in disguise? Well according to me the formation of new posts is somewhat analogous to the establishment of new (and unnecessary) IITs. In the earlier batches there was tough competition for every post and hence the selected members were not only talented but at the same time they also knew the value of their crown since they had to fight hard to earn it. The ultimate lol of this year’s Cultural Council is that many members don’t even know what they have to do let alone how to do, for example-(**censored**) and rumour has it that some of the selected candidates didn’t even bother to get up from their beds and give the interviews they were supposed to. Everyone knows that certificates become hot commodities during placement season and the fact that many of the new secretaries are final year students proves that the Cultural Council is nothing more than a certificate generating machine. Even though the number of girls in the cultural council team has increased this year, there is very little participation from cultural activities. Except dance, all other clubs like drama, ‘music and literary lack substantial IB participation. The constant delaying of events shows the inefficiency and lackadaisical attitude of the members of the current Cultural Council. ‘The fact that the Cultural Council has been debarred from participating in the cultural events of Thomso 2014 is even more saddening. Well, enough said about the CC team. now let us move on to the new utilities installed in our campus. The first question that | asked myself on entering the campus for the first time this semester was “Is it a bird? What is it really?” After seeing so many CCTV cameras in the ‘campus, one would think that a CID case would be cracked through the footage generated by the newly installed cameras. Unfortunately though, (or fortunately) the CCTVs are not functional yet. Now, we need to ask ourselves whether or not these CCTVs are important? Would it not have been better if the monetary amount spent on installing these cameras was used somewhere else like purchasing a new institute vehicle or repairing the projectors of lecture hall complex? Apart from the fact that the CCTVs are not functional it is not surprising that no one has been hired to monitor the video footages. Some students said that the CCTVs find more utility as selfie sites, while some others joked that the CCTVs may involuntarily capture the ‘caught in the act’ videos of the forever fertile PINKY. ‘The overall conclusion drawn is that the installation of CCTVs was not a wise decision and ‘more emphasis should be laid on the basic issues concerning our campus (for example cleaning, waste collection and removal of dogs). Every cloud has a silver lining and even though this article has been highly critical of the CCTVs and the Cultural Council, developments related to sports have taken place in the ‘campus. New lights for the football field, a more spacious TT room and the new basketball and tennis courts are stupendous achievements of the concerned authorities. Never the less, the fact that the campus is still being renovated means there is still room for improvement. Rhapsody, the annual cultural fest of ot a campus was held from 7th to Sth March 2018 Q It was previously called “Tarang” and was 2014, held under “Pravaah’, the golden jubil celebrations of our campus. The fest got ai overwhelming response both in terms participation and sponsorship. A multitude 0 events such as Thahake (laughter riot), Extas (dance competition), Sargam (music competi tion), Symphony (the battle of bands), Glit (fashion parade) and Rangmanch (stage pli took place during the course of the fest. Th band “Gingerfeet” headlined the Pro-nig sponsored by MTS and made March 9 a day je for. Know your Campus ‘Tell us something about your academic and professional background? ‘Ans. I did B Se. After the initial managerial fiasco and teams being sold off backhand, DFL 2014 saw a new entry. Other than the super active B.tech people, this year we've also had a new entry from M.tech, adding to the excitement. This season has Na'vi FC continuing its age old legacy (:P) while Aage Dekho FC has an experienced manager leading it. After faling twice in the year 2010 with issues regarding the engine of the model, ISRO has finally decided to launch its mission using PSLV which uses less power. The ‘then Prime Minister Dr. Man Mohan Singh announced India's Mission to the red planet. He sald “Under this Mission, aur spaceship will go ear Mars and collect important scientific information. This spaceship to Mars will be 2 huge step for us in the area of science and ‘technology’ laying its roots on 15th August '22. It is even less than What a single bus ride for each one of India's 1.2 billion people would ‘new in business and yet to experience the feeling of triumph in the coat, pointed by THE HINDU, tournament. This DFL has also seen a good bunch of frst yearites out to prove themselves, some living up to the expectations and others proving to be surprise packages. By sending Mangalyaan into space, India has achieved a unique milestone of having a space craft that Is an epitome of ‘frugal engineering’. The 450 Crores spent on the mission has been the least capital invested on any MARS mission till date. “Desi Jugaad at its best.” DFL without a troll page is no DFL. With ‘the successful Mars Orbit Insertion operation, ISRO has. become only the fourth space agency to successfully send a spacecraft into the orbit of Mars. n the coming months, the spacecraft will be thoroughly tested and ‘the systematic observation of the planet using its five scientific instruments will begin. The scientists at ISRO have had to work eighteen hours a day at times to make the mission possible. As for the spectators, even the dogs don’t miss out on the excitement. So, the DPT junta is requested to come to the field on match days and watch the players and the teams fight tout for the crown. Oh, and how can we forget the new shiny pair of cards that come out ofthe referee's pocket every now and then (and sometimes for no reason at al: P). Although nobody has yet been cursed by red, some have faced the fury of yellow. The media lauded the scientists for the success of the operation, social media reflected the praises of popular celebrities and multitude spoke of the achievement and compared it with the World cup ‘triumph of 2011, the view of an alien from Mars on the country’s stupendous achievement would not be the same though. What people don’t understand is, achieving excellence in one particular field is not enough and it should not be the sole aim of an individual. Excellent virtues coupled with maximum efficiency in every task constitute human excellence. The concept of human excellence was brought to the modern world by Swami Vivekananda and our campus being a rational level institute recognizes the need of excellence in IITians. Under the guidance of Dr. Sanjay Palsule, the Vivekananda’s Human Excellence Group was established in our campus.
