Minutes for Celebrating Cromford

meeting held at The Greyhound;

Tuesday 7th July, 2015
7.30 pm.

Present: Marie and Paul Turner, John Haynes, Ian Evetts, Tony Walker, Gary Purdy, John and Clarrice
Pass, Ted Morris, Isabelle Chatfield, Duncan Irvine, Dave Mitchell, Rachel Walker
Apologies: Sylvia Evetts, Malc Scothon, Nigel Huish
Minutes:
1. Thanks- was given to all involved with CC 2015. It was a great weekend, despite the wet weather!
2. Treasurers report: there is still some advert money to collect but over the whole weekend we made
a loss of 892. However, some of that was as a result of 175 donated to local groups for the pallet
gardens and other expenses. Some of the money was spent on reusable items such as ducks and
bunting, which will be used again next year. The revenue generated by hiring out the marquee and
delivering the parish newsletter offsets some of that loss, meaning that we currently have 5564.54.
Taking out the 200 Club prizes for next year leaves us with 4589.54.
3. Feedback:
Positives
Pallet gardens
Cromford Dragon
Sam the clown
Story-telling
Fell race in profit
Hands on Science
School fair did well
Cormford walk (Fri am) very popular
Music was good

Negatives
Weather!
Friday night Hill pull
Lack of pudding comp entries
Some comments against the pallet garden
competition
Pallet gardens not striking enough

4. Donations: it was agreed to donate 50 to the Blue Cross charity (chosen by Annette Lowedancing dog demonstration). Our fee of 100 for the marquee hire by the cricket club was also
donated to the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research charity.
5. Date for next year: was agreed 17-19th June, 2016
6. Committee positions for 2016- due to Amandas resignation, the position of Secretary is vacant.
Volunteers were requested. An appeal for new members should be put out in the next parish
newsleter.
7. Getting more people involved- Ian suggested a group of volunteers who we can call upon as and
when necessary. They might not want to be involved with the monthly meetings, but may wish to be
involved with Celebrating Cromford in other ways. Ian will compile a Friends of Celebrating
Cromford list with email or text numbers (whatever their preferred method of contact is) so that we
can get in touch when we need extra help. Please let him know if you know someone who may like
to be involved in that way.
8. Closing Market Place next year- Duncan has spoken to Cllr Russ Boyack regarding the possible
use of Cromford Market place next year. It was agreed that this should be explored, ensuring that

we first have something worthwhile to fill the space, and secondly arrange alternative parking for
residents. A traditional funfair might be an option with sideshows. Paul/ Marie to investigate.
9. Veg show- August bank Holiday. Dave Mitchell will organise a sub-committee to arrange this.
Details to follow via email.
10. Apple day- Saturday 17th October. We may be able to borrow an apple press from Baslow. Dave
will contact the Ripley Morris Men and Ted will try to book 3 Eyed Fox (who played in The Bell on
the Friday night of CC) to play. Paul will ask Gervase if he is available to play.
11. Fund-raiser- discussion took place regarding the possibility of CC organising a barn dance. It was
agreed that we should explore the costings for the caller and use of the large room in the
Community Centre (Ted). This may be organised for February 2016.
12. Lantern procession- this year will be part of the Christmas light turning on ceremony (29th
November, 2015).
13. AOB:
Publicity- Ian reported that this year, the Radio Derby Sally Pepper show, the Peak
Advertiser and some online websites (e.g. Visit Peak District) publicised Celebrating
Cromford. It was also on Facebook and Twitter. However, the Matlock Mercury did not run
any stories about CC or the cricket match this year. Future suggestions made were
Smedley Street Radio, Radio Ashborne and the Reflections publication.
Cllr Gary Purdy introduced himself, thanked everyone involved with Celebrating Cromford for
their work and offered his help as a district councillor. He has an amount of money available
for community projects which could potentially be used to purchase a new marquee or
village storage. The council offices may be a source of information and assistance for us
with contacts, publicity etc.
Hill pull- needs reinvigorating. Maybe pub teams could compete for fastest pull to The Bell.
A steam engine may bring back the crowds; barrel push is a different event for variety! The
whole opening ceremony could do with more atmosphere. Marching bands were suggestedJohn P to investigate. It is possible to close the hill for a short while if necessary, with early
enough planning. For highway safety supervision, the police may be willing to assist.
Duncan from Lea/ Holloway has a variety of games/ stalls/ sideshows that are available to
borrow for free. John H has his contact details.
Many CC programmes this year were distributed via local shops/ businesses and Clems
gate! It was agreed that it is better if we keep the programme free for all.
It was requested that charity registration and purchase of a new marquee should be
discussed at a future meeting.
Tour of Britain will pass through Cromford on 18th September. Tony suggested that the
dragon should be on display again wearing a yellow jersey! A small project for Knit and
Natter?!
Halloween- Allen Hill cave would be a good venue for a spooky Halloween event- to be
considered.
The Institute should be used as a venue for next year, if possible.
The rope makers, who cancelled this year due to the weather, would like to attend next year
if we can arrange some sort of shelter in case of adverse weather.
Dale Diva may be interested in organising the pudding competition next year.
Tony knows someone who may organise educational outdoor walks.
Did everyone who attended Open Gardens pay? Suggestions, if this is an issue, included
wrist bands or rubber stamps to prove payment.

Next CC Meeting: Tuesday 8th September, 7:30pm at The Boat
