variety, he was able to have 16 bags of fruits. How many bags of fruits
did he harvest?
Analyze the problem.
a. How many bags of fruits did Mang Rodrigo harvest?
b. Whats the number sentence? 16 x 12 =n
c, How can we solve the problem mentally?
2. Performing the Activity
Group the pupils into six working teams. Ask them to think of
strategies in multiplying mentally 16 x 12.
Expected answer
Solution 1: By mental computation
16 Mentally multiply the multiplicand by the ones: 2 x 16 = 32
x42 Mentally multiply the multiplicand by the tens: 10 x 16 = 160
Mentally add the partial products: = 192
Solution 2: By using the Distributive Property
16x 12 = 16x (10 +2)
160 + 32
192
3. Processing the Activities
How did you go with the activity?
How did you find the product without paper and pencil?
For Solution 1: + We multiplied mentally the ones.
+ We multiplied mentally the tens by the ones.
+ We added mentally the two partial products.
For Solution 2: + We used the Distributive Property to find product
mentally
4, Reinforcing the Concept and Skill
Discuss the presentation under Explore and Discover on page 37
of LM Math Grade 4. Then, give the following activities.
‘A. Mentally give the products of the following:
15 13, 14 12
x12 x x13 x14
B. Have the pupils perform the exercise under Get Moving and
‘Keep Moving on pages 37 and 38, LM Math Grade 4
5. Summarizing the Lesson
Lead the pupils to give the generalization by asking: How do you
multiply mentally 2-digit by 2-digit numbers with products up to 200?
