1.

1 DOF spring-mass vibration system with stiffness K and mass M, subjected to harmonic
excitation of F0*Sin(t).
a. Whats the natural resonant frequency, n?
b. Consider the harmonic response only, at which frequency the vibration amplitude is the
highest? Assuming damping ratio is very small (<<1).
c. Consider the harmonic response only, whats the vibration amplitude at very low
frequency (<<n)?
d. Consider the harmonic response only, whats the vibration amplitude at very high
frequency (>>n)?
2. 1 DOF pendulum swing system with string length of L and point mass M. Ignoring the string
mass, whats the estimation of natural resonant frequency, n? Assuming the swing angle is
small.

4. If both tetrahedral (4-node) and hexahedral (8-node) 3D solid elements can be used to mesh a
solid model, which one do you prefer? Which one can give more accurate simulation results?
5. For the typical isoparametric hexahedral (8-node) solid element with displacement DOFs (Ux,
Uy, Uz),
a. How many shape functions does it have?
b. If you use this element to model a uniform rectangular cantilever beam subjected to
point load at the free end, can you get more accurate results with finer mesh?
c. For a fine mesh refined from a coarse mesh, do you expect to see smaller displacement
with the fine mesh compared to the coarse mesh? Or, larger displacement? Or,
unknown?
6. For a cantilever beam (width = b; height = h; length = L) subjected to a CONSTANT deflection at
the free end,
a. Where is the location of the maximum normal stress?
b. If increase the beam width, b, do you expect the maximum normal stress increase? Or,
decrease? Or, something else?
c. If increase the beam height, h, do you expect the maximum normal stress increase? Or,
decrease? Or, something else?

can start to work?
