Nautical Studies

One of the first-cycle professional study programmes offered by the Faculty of Maritime
Studies and Transport of the University of Ljubljana is that of Nautical Studies. The study
programme consists of 180 ECTS and lasts three years (or, in other words, six semesters).
The main objective of the professional study programme of Nautical Studies is to create
professional, competent and interdisciplinary experts in the field of marine navigation, with
emphasis placed on theoretical and practical skills necessary to master a vessel and have
control of marine navigation in compliance with the requirements of the 1978/1995
International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for
Seafarers of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Through the studies the graduates will have acquired the knowledge and skills necessary for
the acquisition of the certificate of Officer in Charge of Navigational Watch on Ships of 500
Gross Tonnage or More, or Chief Mate or Master on Ships of 500 Gross Tonnage or More.
The study programme is appropriate in particular for secondary school students that would
like to become highly qualified in the field of navigation while not cherishing the wish for
research and theoretical studies, which is typical of academic study programmes.
The nature of this study programme is interdisciplinary. In addition to the core courses of
navigation, its content includes topics from economics, international law, maritime
administration, sociology, cultural and communication studies, and methodology.
