Jay Teaching Philosophy

I believe that the foundation for learning starts with the teacher. Every student is capable of
learning, and it is the teachers responsibility to help them reach their fullest potential. For this
to occur, teachers must purposefully plan rigorous standards-based lessons, implement these
lessons using research-based best practices, evaluate students progress throughout the lessons
using formative assessment strategies, and revise and re-teach as needed. Student-centered
instruction is a must. This approach promotes purposeful learning for all students. Leaving out
even one component puts the students learning in jeopardy.
Similarly, the classroom itself must foster learning. The environment should be one with rich
discussions, visual stimuli, and opportunities for students to make connections with other
students and within themselves. Students must feel appreciated, respected, and valued. They
must feel as though their beliefs and thoughts matter and that their contributions are worthy.
Finally, as a teacher, I must demonstrate to my students that learning is a lifelong process. I
must show enthusiasm about my subject area and constantly review and revise my practices to
act as a model for learning for my students. I must collaborate with my peers, just as I
encourage my students to do the same.
I believe that W.B. Yeats captured the exhilaration of teaching when he wrote: Education is not
the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. My goal is to ignite in my learners a passion for
learning that takes them beyond our four walls and into the real world.
