June 2015

Dear New York-Penn League Fans:

It is an honor to welcome you to the 2015 season of the New York-Penn League. The
New York-Penn League was established in 1939 - then called the Pennsylvania-Ontario
New York League (PONY League) - and will celebrate its 77th year of continuous
operation in 2015, making the New York-Penn League the oldest, continuously-operated
CLASS A league in Baseball. Over the Leagues 77-year history, 110 baseball clubs have
been a member of the League. In 2015, the League welcomes its newest member, the
West Virginia Black Bears baseball club and Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate, which will play in
Morgantown, West Virginia.
In 2014, the New York-Penn League elected its newest members to its Hall of Fame. Those
inductees were Randy Johnson, John Elway, and long-time League historian, Charlie
Wride. Randy, John and Charlie join seven National Baseball Hall of Fame members, all
of whom were inducted in 2012, and a number of League and club personnel, who were
inducted in 2013.
The League also celebrates its 11th annual All-Star Game, hosted by the Aberdeen
Ironbirds at Ripken Stadium on Tuesday, August 18th. For more information about the
2015 All-Star Game, regular season schedule, playoff schedule, game tickets, Internet
radio and video broadcasts, box scores, club standings, hitting and pitching statistics,
attendance, press releases, League and club merchandise, and more, visit the New YorkPenn Leagues web site at www.newyork-pennleague.com.
So, sit back and relax, and allow the New York-Penn League clubs to provide you and
your family with that special magic of Minor League Baseball at affordable prices in the
most enjoyable surroundings possible.

Very truly yours,

NEW YORK-PENN LEAGUE

2015 Scholarship Program

The 2015 NYPL Scholarship Program is open to any graduating senior
from a public or private high school within the leagues footprint,
who has been accepted at any two or four-year college or university,
vocational or technical education institution. Applicants will be judged
based on academic performance, volunteer and extracurricular
activities, and the impact their local NYPL club and Minor League
Baseball has had on their lives.
The Scholarship Program will consist of two stages a local round
and a divisional round. In the local stage, students will apply directly
with their local NYPL team, with one applicant chosen by each of the
14 teams to advance to the divisional round. The 14 finalists will be
separated by the division of the team they represent. The winning
application from each of the NYPLs three divisions (McNamara,
Pinckney and Stedler).
The scholarships top prize includes three winners of a $2,500
scholarship and eleven winners of $250 each for books.
The New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation initiated the
scholarship program in 2009 as a way to assist high school seniors
from within our leagues footprint who not only meet and exceed
traditional scholarship criteria, but have also demonstrated the
positive benefits their local NYPL club has had on their life, said Ben
J. Hayes, President of the New York-Penn League. The Foundation is
pleased to have this scholarship program in place and to support our
14 member clubs in their year-round community outreach efforts.
Students must have a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) and participate in
extracirricular activities. Applicant should also be involved with
community service and be able to provide references. A copy of a
high school transcript and letter of acceptance to institution must be
included in application.
In 2014, the three $2,500 scholarships were awarded to students
from the Aberdeen IronBirds, Jamestown Jammers, and Connecticut
Tigers.

The New York-Penn League Hall of Fame was established in 2012 to recognize
individuals for their overall accomplishments or contributions to the league
both on the field of play or in an administrative role. The Hall of Fame
inductions include three parts recognizing NYPL alumni, notable league
personnel and team officials, and individuals nominated and voted on by New
York-Penn League clubs.
The Hall of Fame inductions will occur annually at the league All-Star Game,
the first of which inducted seven NYPL alumni at the 2012 New York-Penn
League All-Star Game in Niles, OH on August 14th. The seven inductees
include:

Wade Boggs

Boggs hit .263 for the Elmira Pioneers in 1976. He would

not hit below .300 again until 1992, his final year with the
Red Sox. While with the Red Sox, Boggs won five American
League batting titles, including four consecutive. from 19851988. He remains the only player in Major League history
to collect 200 hits and score 100 runs in seven consecutive
seasons. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in
2005 and to the NY-P Leagues All-Time Team in 2010.

lead the White Sox to their first pennant in 40 years while
being named the American Leagues Most Valuable Player.
Fox was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997
