Cross-Curricular Preschool Reading

We will be doing a project with Mrs. Kirbys Written and Oral Communications 1 (WOC 1)
classes. They WOC 1 curriculum requires students to read a memoir, Warriors Dont Cry
by Melba Patillo Beals and critically watch the movie based on the classic To Kill a
Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. In doing so, they will be exploring the various themes and
motifs that reflect important life and social skills. To pay forward these themes and
practice reading and oral communication skills, WOC 1 students will read theme-aligned
childrens books to the Mini Mustangs. Our part of this project, as preschool teaching
experts, will be:
1. We will research and provide a list of theme-aligned, preschool
appropriate books.
2. We will be teaching WOC1 students how to read to preschool aged
children.
What we need to do:
Come up with 5 rules for reading to preschoolers
Make a video about each rule
Record an exemplary reading of a book
Find preschool appropriate books that fit into the themes and motifs from To Kill a
Mockingbird
Create an ePub book with all of the information for Mrs. Kirbys WOC1 class
Agenda:
1. Determine 5 rules for reading to preschool students.
2. Create a video about each rule. This video will: (1) explain the rule, (2) state why it
is important, and (3) show an example.
3. Record 4 exemplary readings. These videos must follow each of the 5 rules.
4. Select books from our library that fall under the themes.
5. Compile information into an ePub book.
