Killer Tomatoes top Gang 4-3
After trailing 3-0 through two innings, the Platte
Killer Tomatoes stormed back to take the lead on a
two-run single in the eighth inning by 53 year old
Frank Cutler and held on to defeat Canova 4-3 in the
first-round action at the South Dakota Class B state

For as strong as Gassman was throwing, Platte

reliever Richard Sternberg saved the tomatoes by
going the final 6 2/3 inning and giving up just three
hits with six strikeouts. Canova had a chance to
increase their 3-1 lead in the fifth with the bases
loaded on nobody out, but Sternberg struck out
Gassman before getting Jimmy Bauer to hit into an
infield put-out, ending the Canova threat.
When they got three runs in those first two innings,
it was looking like one of those Canova blowouts

Amateur baseball tournament Sunday at Cadwell

Park in Mitchell. Cutlers two-out line drive to
right-centerfield came after Hayden Kuiper singled
and Audie Kuipers reach on a walk. With runner in
scoring position, Cutler took an outside ball and
drove to the gap.
He gave me a pitch I could handle over the plate,
Cutler said, it was straight and up a little bit. I put a
good swing on it and it worked out. That was a great
feeling.

where they just take you to the cleaners, Cutler

said. What a great job Richard did against them,
though, especially a team like Canova. He just
pitched great.

Whats in the name?

The Platte Killer Tomatoes name was born in
the early 1980s. Before this time the teams
colors were bright yellow and green. When the
team needed new uniforms, the decision was
made to change the color to red and grey. A
team member commented We went to looking
like a bunch of cucumbers to a bunch of
tomatoes! The name stuck and the team has
been known as the Killer Tomatoes since that
time. The team even adopted the Attack of the
Killer Tomatoes as their team song.

Theme Song Lyrics

Attack of the killer tomatoes! Attack of the
killer tomatoes! Theyll beat you, bash you,
squish you, mash you, Chew you up for brunch
and finish you off for dinner or lunch! Theyre
marching down the halls, Theyre crawling up
the walls, Theyre gooey, gushy, squishy, mushy,
Rotten to the core. Theyre standing outside
your door!
