Indigenous Gold Standard Kit for MDR & XDR TB

The current gold standard in solid culture is the age old
method of sensitivity on LJ medium with or without drugs. This
method draws a comparison between the number of colonies
on drug containing and drug free media (1% Proportion
method) hence takes longer due to macroscopic appearance
of growth. The conventional drug-susceptibility testing (DST)
uses standard LJ medium and takes several weeks for the

results to come. Our technique is faster, cheaper and a more sensitive method than
conventional DST technique. Our technique utilizes detection of enzymes specific to TB
bacilli with the help of a substrate. Thus early detection of the growth in presence or absence
of drugs reveals resistance to the respective drugs. The technique is less expensive than
conventional DST methods using Commercial liquid culture or Line probe assays but faster
than conventional DST methods using solid media.

Recently, WHO (WHO, 2010) endorsed and recommended new policy on culture and DST
methods, and recommended the use of the current method for screening of patients
suspected of having MDR-TB, under clearly defined programmatic and operational
conditions. It is also a technology endorsed by the New Diagnostics Working Group, WHOs
Stop TB partnership at the first referral level.
