AR Meeting Notes: January 12, 2010

• Guest speaker: Senator Jay Tibshraeny

He is hopeful that the legislature can get a sales tax referral

out to the voters. Legislative session began yesterday. You
can see how legislators voted at www.azleg.gov. Jay will be
running for mayor of Chandler for the upcoming year, as his
term is ending. He has been extremely supportive of
teachers and education, and CEA would like to gather
signatures to put him on the ballot. Registered Maricopa
County voters are eligible to sign.

• February 8-12th voting for CEA executive board members.

There are several positions open for next year. There are six
out of the eight positions up for election: President,
Treasurer, 2 Co-Vice Presidents, Corresponding Secretary,
and Recording Secretary. Current board members may
choose to run for re-election. If you are interested in running,
please email Bob Harpur.

• Super Q Committee/Process: 6 members will be a part of

Super Q this Spring. In the past, CEA has sent out a survey to
employees to rate which items are the most important for
bargaining. During Super Q bargaining this year will be
different. The time formerly spent in bargaining will focus on
where the money will come from to survive the budget crisis.
This past year, CUSD faced a 9 million dollar cut. For 2010-
2011, we are facing a potential 18-20 million dollar cut. The
new survey will be used to generate ideas and provide
feedback from teachers.

• Supreme Court threw out the case that AEA filed against the
AZ legislature.

• AEA Foundation for Teaching and Learning is offering grant

opportunities for members. National Board Certification,
professional development, mentoring/new teacher programs,
scholarship opportunities, and more are available. Check it
out at: http://www.arizonaea.org/foundation.php

• 9 new members joined CEA. Hooray! We are still accepting

applications.

• Ten minute meeting idea for this month. Reps can receive a
ticket for a $25 gift certificate if they bring a sign in sheet for
their 10 minute meeting or a picture of their new/improved
CEA bulletin board.

• Friday, February 19th Social (tentatively scheduled). More to

come in the weeks ahead!
