DearMother,
Wearealltryingtodothebestwecanhere.Fromamedicalstandpointasa
doctor,ithasbeenmiserable.Thearmydoesnothaveanestablishedmedicalcorps,sowe
havebeencopyingthoseofFranceandEngland.IhavebeenworkinginCasualty
ClearingStations(CCS),whicharesetupintents,whereIperformsurgery.

Ihaveseennewtechnologiesduringthewar.Newweaponslikethemachinegun
candosomuchdamagetoasoldiersbody.Ithasbeenlessthanayearsincewehave
beeninvolvedinthiswarandtheUnitedStatesdeathtollsareupto120,000.The
medicalsystemislikeanassemblyline.Stretcherbearersfirstcomeintocontactwiththe
woundedandmovethemfromtrenchestowaitingambulances.Ambulancesthenbring
themtoourcasualtyclearingstations.Wehavemadesomeverygoodmedicaladvances.
Wehavelearnedthatwehave12hoursbeforeinfectionspreads.Wehavealsostartedto
usebloodtransfusionsandxraymachines.Thexrayshavereallyhelpedusfindshrapnel
andbullets.

WhenIhadvolunteeredtobeapartoftheUnitedStatesmedicalteamduringwar,
Ididnotknowwhattoexpect.Ijustwantedtomakeadifference.Afriendofmine,

PrivateClarenceC.MoorerelatedtomethathewasastretcherbearerintheHindenburg
Lineforabouthalfaday.Wehadtosteponthesedeadsoldierstokeepfromgoinginthe
waterandmudsodeepandthrowingthe[wounded]offthestretcher....Somesoldiers
havecometousfornotonlyphysicalneeds,butmentalonesaswell.Mostsoldiersare
gettingusedtolivinginmuddyareasfilledwithrats,rottingcorpses,andexploding
shells,butotherscannot.Somearehysterical,disoriented,paralyzed,andunabletoobey
orders.Wehavebeencallingtheillnessshellshock.Webelieveitscausedbytheharsh
conditionsofwar.Someoftheseconditionswecannothelp.Liceandotherpestsisone
ofthem.Soldiersbeingamongthedirtytrenchescausesthis.

Idohavesomegoodnewstosharewithyou,Mother.Ournursesaregettingbetter
accommodation.Theynowhavebetterlivingarrangements,farawayfromthemale
patients.Maybethisisasignthatourcountryisheadedintherightway.Wearealso
gettingsomebetterfacilitiesforsurgery.Ijustwantedtoendmyletterwithsomegood
news.IwillwriteagainassoonasIcan.
