CLA 231 Introduction to Roman History

1. Course Aims:
This course will provide an introduction to Roman History examining the narrative of the
Romans and their relations with those beyond their boundaries. We will cover the period
from the foundation of Rome to the period of Constantine in the fourth century CE, as
kings are replaced by a Republic which in turn is replaced by an Empire. While the whole
time-span encompasses around a millennium there will be more focus on the years of the
1st century BCE and CE, a period of major change and tumultuous events which is welldocumented in various sources. In addition to the required textbook, the readings for this
course will also include primary source materials which will posted on Blackboard.

Students missing a test will be awarded a zero for that test
If the test was missed for a valid reason, submit to the instructor a written request
for special consideration explaining your reason for missing the test, and attaching
appropriate documentation, such as a medical certificate (the only medical
certificate that will be accepted is the University's student medical certificate,
(http://www.artsci.utoronto.ca/current/undergraduate/forms)), or a College
Registrar's note.
Only illness, serious personal affliction, religious obligation, and unforeseeable
duties of family care will be considered good reasons for missing a test.
!o make-up tests will be given; the weighting of other graded work will be
increased by the amount of the missed test.
