Box and Whiskers Plot
Mean: to get the mean of the data you must add up all the numbers and get a total then take the
total and divide by how many numbers there are.
Ex: ( ADD) 53 + 55 + 55 + 58 + 65 + 68 + 70 + 72 + 77 + 83 + 85 + 87 + 87 + 90 + 93 + 95 +
97 = 1,287
(DIVIDE) 1,287/17 = 70.71 (rounded to the nearest hundredths)
Median: The median is the middle number. Since there is an odd amount of number scratch out
numbers until there is only one left in the middle.
Ex: 53, 55, 55, 58, 65, 68, 70, 72, 77, 83, 85, 87, 87, 90, 93, 95, 97
The middle number is 77
Mode: the mode is the number that appears the most.
Ex: 53, 55, 55, 58, 65, 68, 70, 72, 77, 83, 85, 87, 87, 90, 93, 95, 97
Since 55 and 87 both appear two times they are both the mode.
Range: the range is the biggest number minus the smaller number.
Ex: 53, 55, 55, 58, 65, 68, 70, 72, 77, 83, 85, 87, 87, 90, 93, 95, 97
97 53 = 44
First Quartile: take the first set of numbers that are listed before the median and get the middle
number of the first set.
Ex: 53, 55, 55, 58, 65, 68, 70, 72, 77, 83, 85, 87, 87, 90, 93, 95, 97
Since there are two middle numbers you must add both the numbers together then divide by two.
Ex: 58 + 65 = 123 123/2 = 61.5
Quartile 1 is 61.5
Third Quartile: take the second set of numbers that are listed after the median and get the middle
numbers of the second set.
Ex: 53, 55, 55, 58, 65, 68, 70, 72, 77, 83, 85, 87, 87, 90, 93, 95, 97
Since there are two middle numbers you must add both the numbers together then divide by two.
Ex: 87 + 90 = 177 177/2 = 88.5
Quartile 3 is 88.5
Inner Quartile Range (IQR): to get the inner quartile range you subtract quartile one from
quartile three.
Ex:
Quartile three (88.5) Quartile one (61.5) = 27
IQR is 27
Outliers: to find the outliers you take the IQR and multiply it by 1.5 to get your total.
