Ellen Damm
“Is your last name really Damm? Is it pronounced Dahm?” These are a few of the
questions that I get asked on an everyday basis. Damm is the coolest last name that I think
anyone could ever grow up with. How many kids can say that they have gotten away with
swearing since thy were fou? Teun! Recently fom my research about my Damm family tre
have discovered that my Dad’s side of the family originated from Denmark. My great great
grandpa, Hans Chfistian Kruuse Damm, came from Copenhagen, Denmark, to New York, New
/
York, on Noyémber 10®, 1884. Throughout my family, the last name Damm seems to be the
only last ndme that sticks. My great grandpa, Leopold Damm, is the first person in our family to
just hayé one last name, Leopold is a family name that has been passed down for centuries.
+ name that has been passed down throughout the years is Michael, Not only did my
‘grandpa have the name Michael in his name, but so does my uncle and my father.
‘When my parents were deciding what to name me they always knew that if I was a boy
that they would name me Albee Damm simply because they loved to joke around, Luckily I was
a gil so they had to choose something litle more serious. On both sides of my family there are
important women named Ellen so they only found it appropriate that they name me Samantha
Ellen Damm with the hopes that I would turn out to be as good of a person as the Ellen’s on both
sides of the family. On my dad’s side of the family Ellen is the name of my Grandmother whoDamm
a
just recently passed away from ovarian cancer. Ellen McKeon was the sweetest, kindest, gentle
women I have ever met. It has been an honor to be named after such a remarkable women, On
my mom’s side of the family she has an Aunt Ellen who she was very close to growing up.
Although I have still yet to meet her, I have heard from other people in my family that she is a
very honorable woman.
In conclusion, my Damm family roots have a lot of history and meaning behind them.
Being the only Damm family member in North Carolina is a very unique thing to experience.
Despite all of the confused looks on people’s faces I get when I tell them that my last name is
Damm, I still wouldn’t change it for anything
