Installation instructions for 8SS

magnetically operated hall effect position sensors
GENERAL INFORMATION
The Hall effect integrated circuit is mounted on a ceramic base
using the solder reflow (flip chip) process and is covered with
either a brass cap or a hard epoxy coating. 8SS sensors are
primarily intended for high volume applications requiring minimal handling. The preferred mounting and termination
method is soldering to a printed circuit board.
The 8SS offers 3-pin in-line PC board terminals on .100"
mounting centers. Listings with solder pads or leadwires are
also available. 8SS sensors are used with 4.5 to 5.5 VDC or 6 to
16 VDC power supplies. The single output is current sinking
(8SS9, current sourcing).

Bipolar devices have a plus (South

pole) maximum operate point, and a
minus (North pole) minimum release
point. Operate and release points can
be both positive or both negative.
Unipolar devices require a South pole
to turn ON. Removal of the South pole
turns them OFF.

Since most of the compatible fluids evaporate rapidly at 24C

(75F), MICRO SWITCH does not expect them to affect the
8SS devices at elevated temperatures, or under splash conditions, providing no power is applied. If power is to be applied,
the use of a suitable coating applied over the terminals to
prevent galvanic corrosion is recommended.

SOLDERING INSTRUCTIONS
Hand soldering:
Use 60/40 rosin core solder, employing a 399C (750F) controlled temperature, 1/8" chisel tip soldering iron. To avoid
delamination of the terminals from the ceramic, do not hold the
iron on the terminals for more than 4 seconds (solder pads, 3
seconds). The temperature of the lead at the ceramic conductor must not exceed 250C (482F).
Wave soldering
Use Loncoflux 106A35 or equivalent. Preheater-s should be set
for 95C (200F) on top (component side) of PC board just
prior to board entering wave. (This may have to be adjusted
depending upon board thickness.) Solder temperature should
be a maximum of 260C (500F), preferably 252C to 260C
(485F to 500F). Set conveyor speed to approximately 4.5
feet per minute (1,37 meter/min.). Select a speed which gives
full solder fillets and a minimum of bridging and icicles. The
printed circuit board requires rigid support during wave
soldering.

CLEANING
Proper cleaning fluids should be selected, based on the type of
contaminants to be removed. MICRO SWITCH recommends
use of the following:
Alcohols
Chlorinated solvents
Fluorinated solvents

WARNING
Handling - The ceramic may be fractured if subjected to
Impact. Handle with care. Terminals may be formed if supported between form and ceramic substrate during bending.
Electrical - Do not exceed maximum ratings. Do not reverse
supply voltage polarity.

Warranty/Remedy
Seller warrants its products to be free from defects in design,
material and workmanship under normal use and service.
Seller will repair or replace without charge any such product it
finds to be so defective on its return to Seller within 18 months
after date of shipment by Seller. The foregoing is in lieu of all
other expressed or implied warranties (except of title), including those of. merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. The foregoing is also purchaser's sole remedy and is in
lieu of all other guarantees, obligations, or liabilities or any
consequential, incidental, or punitive damages attributable to
negligence or strict liability, all by way of example.
