Ways to Help Your Child Reading Responding to literature *Who is your favorite character and why? *What is your favorite part of the story and why? *What happened in the beginning, middle and end of the story? *What is the problem and solution of the story? *Can you tell me what happened in the story. (retelling) *If you could change this story how would you change it? *Which character would ydu want to be and Why? “If you could change the énding of this story how would you change it? : Individual Reading (Refer to reading envelope for more strategies) *Look at the pictures in the book to help make your predictions *Predict “What do you think this story is about?” *Did you see any words that you can read? *Crispy pointing- point to each word as you read. *Get mouth ready to sound out words. *Does the story make sense? *Look for words that are repeated in story. Writing Have a journal Write a note to a family member Help to write the grocery list Mail a letter to a friend/relative How to help with writing: *sit side by side and sound out each word together as you are writing and focus on initial and ended sounds. *Write simple sentences using simple sight words such as: the, at, in, on, is, can, went, and, has, to, we, it, you, yes *Focus on capitalization and periods
