The investigation in the cases of failures has brought out a hhumber of deficiencies in the quality of brake block hangers as well ws musintenance of brake rigging by coaching depots and workshops. With a view to arrest these failures, the following action needs to be taken immediately in the workshops and coaching depots ‘ona drive bass, a Procurement of Brake Block Hangers “The new brake block hangers must be procured as per the revised specification C- 9808, Rev. 2 and Drg. No. SK-93286 Alt. 5. The new brake block hangers must tbe checked to see that the manufacturers’ mark and mark for the material i. (Class 34 is marked in the hanger. Relief radius provided in the neck portion of the hanger should not be less than 38 Ras specified in the drawing. "There ae no surface defects like forging laps and euts and no surface cracks ete. © The hangers must be properly stored to avoid rusting, corrosion et. during storage. Before hangers are used, these must be cleaned and chalk tested or Magnaflux tested particularly in the neck region to ensure that there are no surface cracks. 1 4) Maintenance of Brake Gear Rigging : ‘+ Brake rigging must be thoroughly checked with special attention to the following ‘brake gear components: ‘+ Brake gear pins and bushes including collar bush fitted in brake beam (RDSO SK.93186 alt’3 & SK. 81039 alt.8) ~ Check for clearance more than 1 mm, damaged bushes and notched or heavily wom out pins. ‘© ‘Z.“lever hangers pins ( RDSO SK- 98127 for U/F& SK-98026 item? for BMBC) should be checked for Heavy wear, dislocation of welded washer, slackened nuts ‘and damaged split pins. If the pin is wom out or the welded washer is broken it ‘must be replaced with a new pin as per RDSO design. + °Z? lever hanger (WTAC, 3.2 302 for U/P& WTAC, 3.2-402,item7 for BMBC) ~ Check for elongated holes or deformed body. The holding with the bogie and the split pin used for suspension shall be checked for correct fitment. ‘© Floating hanger lever in U/F mounted arrangement and RDSO SK- 98031 item 1 to BMBC arrangement — Check for elongated holes or deformed body. The ‘holding with the bogie and the split pin used for suspension shall be checked for ‘correct fitment. + Brake hanger lever bracket (T-0-3-631 and T-0-3-632) ~ Check, in case of congue oles oF deformed body, these should be cut and new bracket should be welded ‘© Block hangers (RDSO SK. 93286 alt.2& STR C-9808 Rev.2) Existing hangers should be checked for corrosion, dent masks, twist and cracks. Special attention _may be paid tothe neck region which may be cleaned and chalk tested to ensure ‘that there are no cracks which could develop in service. The bushes fitted in the hanger may be renewed if worn out. A hanger whose bore holes are wor out should be replaced. The pin holding the block hanger to the bogie frame bracket may be checked for correct fitment and provision of securing strap. ‘© Safety wire ropes arrangement (T-3-2-651 & T-3 -2 -650 for BMBC) ~ should be replaced in case of broken wire stands. The eye bolt assembly should be checked for proper holding. The nut may be locked into position by a lock nut or by tack ‘welding. ‘© Brake beam (T-3-2-624 for U/F & T-3-2-650 for BMBC) - check for corroded body, permanent deformation and creck at welded joints. Replace if required. Enlarged or elongated holes of eye-bolts may rebuilt by welding. Brake block and head (T-3-1-619, T-3-1-605, T-3-1-612, & T-3-1-617, for UF & T-3.1-801, RDSOSK-98066,T'3.1 612, & RDSO SK’ 98033 for BMBC) - ‘check for misalignment with wheel, missing or improper size of split pins at the ‘end of brake beam, slack in shoe adjuster and key, uneven wear of brake block ‘and damaged split pins. Proper fitment of the brake block and the head may be censured, In brake gear, washers must be used as necessary to eliminate lateral clearances ‘and to prevent bulb cotiers breaking. Safety lugs provided across the head of the block hanger pins shall be checked and provided. ‘The adjusting link (palm rods) shall be correctly adjusted as per the whee! diameter to prevent excessive forces coming on the linkages. Replace wor out/eacked/anevenly wom out brake blocks. Similarly, the brake shoe adjuster & the brake shoe key (3-607 BT3-1618 for UF 3-1807 BEMU3- 1-808 for BMC) ~ must be examined for proper functioning and shall be replaced ‘where found to be damaged/non-functional. The adjuster key as wel as the brake ‘beam end split pin must be properly retained against alling. ‘As an overall check, check the brake beam for movement in the longitudinal ‘vertical directions. Excessive movement would be indicative of poor condition ‘of brake rigging. If so, a thorough check should be conducted of components/sub- assemblies & thei fixing. ‘Coaches which are noticed to have brake gear ratling or persistent defects during ‘run may be subjected to checks and repairs in the base depots on priority ‘The bulb comers and spilt pins used In the fastening of the brake gear pins shall also be carefully checked and replaced as necessary. The bulb cotters & split pins should not be re-used.
