interact?

Night & Day

What causes the night and day on Earth?
The Earth rotates around the Sun AND spins on its axis
like a top. This two part system makes our day and
night possible.

The Sun, Earth, & Moon System

An orbit is the path an
object takes around
another object. The
Earth orbits around
the Sun. We also call
this revolving.
One revolution, orbit,
takes about 365 days.

Seasons
In temperate zones we
experience 4 seasons.
Seasons occur because
the Earth is tilted on
its axis, this allows the
sun to be more direct
in certain
hemispheres during
its rotation around the
Sun.

MarchSPRING

Sept FALL

JUNE- SUmmerSun is directly

overhead and the
rays are most
intense

December- WINTER:
Sun is less intense
and the rays are not
direct, they are
grazing the surface
of the Earth in our
hemisphere.

Tides
Tide- rise and fall of
Earths oceans.
-Tides are caused by the
pull of the Sun and
moons gravitational pull
on the Earths oceans.
-Tides rotate between High
Tide and Low tide.
-It is about 6 hours
between each high and
low tide.
-About 12 hours pass from
High tide to High Tide.

Constellations
Constellations are groups
of stars that seem to
form a picture in the
night sky.

Our Place
In the beginning
astronomers thought that
the Earth was the center
of the solar system.

NOW we know we are

one of many planets
that revolves around
the SUN.

Moon Phases

Our moon cycles through

phases. This is because
we only see HALF of the
moon at a time.

The part that is

reflecting the suns
light is what we see in
the night sky. This
amount changes
because Earth rotates
on its axis and
revolves around the
sun at the same time!

Moon Phases
It takes about one month
(30 days) for the moon to
move through its
complete cycle in our
sky.

Moon Phases
If our begin with a NEW
MOON the phases occur
in the following order:
1. NEW MOON
2. Waxing Cresent
3. First Quarter
4. Waxing Gibbous
5. FULL MOON
6. Waning Gibbous
7. Third Quarter
8. Waning Cresent
