POWER ELECTRONIC CIRCUITS

Fall 2013

HOMEWORK #1
Question 1:

(Due date: 13 November 2013)

A classical rectifier is to be designed to provide 5V 1% for a logic circuit, with output power of
up to 12W. The input is conventional 220V, 50Hz source.
i) Choose a transformer ratio
ii) Choose a diode configuration
iii) Calculate the capacitor value to meet the requirements
iv) Draw the load voltage, the load current and the source current (secondary side) waveforms for
maximum output power (12W).
Question 2:
The single phase half-wave uncontrolled rectifier has a freewheeling diode and a ripple free average
load current of 20A (high inductance) . The source is 220V 50Hz.
i) Draw the waveforms for the currents in D and DFW
ii) Express the source current in Fourier series and draw the first five components and their sum.
iii) Determine the input PF and HF of the source current at the rectifier input
Question 3:
A single phase half controlled bridge rectifier operated from a120V 60Hz ac supply. The load
current with an average value of I is continuous and negligible ripple content. If the delay angle of
thyristors is 60, calculate,
i) The harmonic factor of the input current
ii) The displacement factor
iii) The input power factor
