According to the authors, Barbara Freeman and Lindy Crawford, English language learners (ELL)
are doing very poorly or failing in math. The main reason for this is because the core curriculum
currently used in our schools was not designed with ELLs in mind. In this journal the authors
discussed the math program called, HELP with English Language Proficiency (HELP). This
program is research-based and has a standard-based curriculum. Furthermore, this program utilizes
sheltered instruction strategies and techniques to help middle school ELLs comprehend grade level
math content. The authors reported that the HELP math program is an excellent supplemental
curriculum that provides L1 (Spanish) support. It is web-based and allows the teacher to individualize
and differentiate math instruction for ELLs.
