Answer all questions
1. Write down the equations of motion of a particle under gravitation.
2. What do you understand by acceleration and retardation?
3. Define DAlemberts principle.
4. State the law of conservation of momentum.
5. State the difference between impulse and momentum.
6. Define Co-efficient of restitution.
7. Define friction and classify its types.
8. When do you say that the motion of the body is impending?
9. Define coefficient of friction and express its relationship with angle of friction.
10. State coulombs law of dry friction.
Part B (8+16+16=40)

(a) A motion of particle is described by an equation, displacement

S=5t2-7t+2. Find (a)Displacement, velocity, acceleration when t=2 sec.
(b)Minimum displacement and corresponding velocity and acceleration.(8)
Or
(b) A car starts from the rest and accelerate uniformly to the speed of 80km/hr
over the distance of 500m.Find the time and acceleration. Further acceleration
raise the speed to 96km/hr in 10 sec. Find the acceleration and distance. The
brakes are applied to bring the car to rest under uniform retardation in 5 sec.
Find the distance covered during braking. (8)

Block P weight of 100 N and a block Q of weight 50N are connected by a cord
that passes over a smooth pulley as shown in figure. Find the acceleration of
the block and the tension in the cord when the system is release from the rest.
Use the principle of work and energy.(16)

Or
Two blocks of mass 150 kg and 200kg as shown in Fig. The 150 kg block is
kept inclined at 20. The coefficient of friction is 0.3.Determine the tension in
the cable and acceleration. Solve by using DAlemberts principle.(16)

13. (a) (i) A ladder of weight 1000 N and length 4 m rests as shown in Figure. If a 750 N
weight is applied at a distance of 3 m from the top of ladder, it is at the point

of sliding.Detemine the coefficient of friction between the ladder and the floor.

(ii)

A rope is wrapped three times around a rod as shown in figure. Determine the
force required on the free end of the rope to support a load of
W=20KN.Take=0.3. (6)

Or
(b) Two blocks A and B of mass 50 and 100 kg respectively are connected by a string
C which passes through a frictionless pulley connected with the fixed wall by another
string D as shown in figure. Find the force P required to pull the block B. Also find
the tension in the string D.Take coefficient of friction at all contact surfaces as .03.
