Purpose

This instruction is established as a guideline for applying insulation resistance cable testing
method as per required by ABS MODU RULE 2014.

The insulation resistance shall be measured at ambient temperature using a DC voltage of

500V to 1000V for cables rated 2400 volts or less as recommended by the manufacturer.
The measurement shall in general be effected 1 min after application of a voltage. Measuring
equipment shall have valid calibration certificate.
The connection procedure in carrying out the test on different types of cables shall be as
follows:
- For single-core cables with metallic covering, the insulation resistance measurement shall
be performed between the conductor and the metallic covering.
- For cable having equal or more than two conductors, with or without metallic covering,
the insulation measurement shall be performed in turn between each conductor and all
other conductors connected together and to the metallic covering, if any.
The measurement values of the insulation resistance shall be recorded in the prepared form
and they shall not be less than the value given in the table below.
