‘112th Transportation Railway Operating Battalion
‘The 712th was a vital lnk inthe succesful conduct in both wars
serving as apart ofthe mot effective method for ransportation of
‘men and materials othe font lines. During WWH, the 712th,
sponsored bythe Central RR of NJ andthe Reading RR, was
activated 25 Oct 1943, embarked on 6 April 1944 for England and
thence to France and Germany. For the Korean War, the 712th
hha boen a reserve component sponsored bythe Reading Railroad,
twas called to active duty in the summer of 1950 and activated
(0n3 September at Ft Eustis, Va with a cadre of 76 officers and
‘enlisted men with ailroad operating experience. After filing in
the ranks with inactive reserves the outfit embarked for Korea in
‘early December. C Company flew over o setup camp a Sindong,
Korea while the rest of the battalion traveled by boat (The USS
‘General MM Patrick and learned a litle about railroading,
arriving 3 January 1951, For the most pat the 712th operated the
‘Korean National Railroad, with Korean nationals as tain
‘engineers in the early days, fom Tazjon north tothe front lines.
[RTOs (Rail Transit Offices) were setup at most stations to insure
consistent rain movement. Batalion Headquarters and
