organometallic chemistry

Organometallic chemistry is concerned with all metals, in

combination with all "organic" elements.
there are many metals !

Generalization is important
the chemistry of e.g. Fe is not much more complicated
than that of C, but after that there are 80 more metals...
we divide reactions in broader categories than organic chemists do

We concentrate on the M side of the M-C bond,

and on how to tune its reactivity

Organometallic Reagent

Reformatsky Reaction
Dialkyl Cadmium
Metalation
Organolithium
Organocopper Reagent
Grignard Reagent

Reformatsky Reaction

The Reformatsky reaction is an organic reaction which

condenses aldehydes (or ketones), 1, with -halo esters, 2,
using a metalliczinc to form -hydroxy-esters,

Dialkyl Cadmium

Recently dialkyl cadmium is used for preparation of ketones

from acyl halide in'the presence of R-MgX.

Metalation

Metalation (metallation) is a chemical reaction which results in

a metal atom being attached to a molecule.
Lithium metal in contact with an organohalide lithiates the
organic molecule and gives the organolithium reagent and
lithium halide. Magnesium similarly metalates organohalides to
give Grignard reagents.
Protons on a molecule that are acidic, even only slightly, can be
exchanged for a metal by a suitable butyllithium reagent
mixture.

Organolithium Compounds

It is also called super Grignard reagent.

More nucleophilic and more basic than Grignard reagent.
There is ionic bond between carbon and lithium.
It is also example of umpolung reagent.

Organocopper Reagent
Organolithium cuprates, R2CuLi are particularly useful for
conjugate or 1,4-addition to ,-unsaturated aldehydes and
ketones.
Lithium dialkylcuprates are formed from organolithium compounds
(review)
It is also called Gillmans reagent.

Grignard Reagent

It is example of umpolung reagent.

There is polar covalent bond between carbon and magnesium
The Grignard reaction is an organometallic chemical reaction
in which alkyl, vinyl, or aryl-magnesium halides(Grignard
reagents) add to a carbonyl group in an aldehyde or
ketone. This reaction is an important tool for the formation
of carboncarbon bonds.[3][4] The reaction of an organic halide
with magnesium is not a Grignard reaction, but provides a
Grignard reagent
