Welcome to the Liberal Arts!
Where: Library Computer Lab (lower-level of the library)
When: Monday, August 10, from 2:45-3:15pm
What to bring: Pencils/pens and a notebook (10.5 inches X 8 inches/26.7 centimeters X 20.3
centimeters)
Designated groups (sit with your group members when you enter the lab):
Group 1: Ganlin, Jie Ren, Daniel
Group 2: Jiechen, J.R., Chetali, Jevic
Group 3: Yaya, Wejdan, Min Vu, Jie Yang
Activity Instructions:
1. (5 minutes) Log on to the computer nearest to you. Open a web browser and go to this
website: https://transyinternationalsummer2015.wordpress.com/. Its our orientation blog!
Next, create your personal blog for use during orientation and FSYE. Using the
instructions provided by me and following the guidance of your group members, create
your blog. Dont worry about developing the blog at this time; simply create the blog on
WordPress. You can come back to the blog later to personalize it.
2. (5 minutes) Join in the conversation in which we review academic session guidelines
and participation rubric.
3. (5 minutes) Listen carefully and take notes on my explanation of the I Am poem
assignment guidelines and deadline.
4. (10 minutes) Explore the Hofstede Centres culture/country comparison tool. Compare
your own culture to that of the United States. With your group members, explore and
discuss answers to these questions:

What perceptions and values of your own culture stand out to you? Why?

Do you think the tool is inaccurate or omits some important cultural perceptions
or values? Which ones?

How does your own culture compare to that of your classmates cultures and the
United States?

What values and perceptions do you think will influence your experience as a
student here in the United States and at Transy? Why?

5. (5 minutes) On the slips of paper provided by me, write one question or comment you
have about the topics in this academic session. Any question will work wellas long as
it relates directly to our subject.
Homework:

On your blog and drawing on your conversation about culture in this session,
write a list of at least five (5) United States perceptions and values that you think
will influence your academic experience here at Transy.

Write an email to me (jwright@transy.edu) that follows Di Pierros suggestions for


appropriate email etiquette (see Module #1) and that responds in a clear
paragraph to the following question: What cultural perceptions and values in the
United States excite you as a student and why?

Begin working on your I Am poem.
