SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION

2016 Vocal Competition Repertoire


REQUIRED REPERTORY: Each contestant must sing one selection from the following genres.
NOTE: Total time for the combined selections MUST NOT EXCEED 20 MINUTES.
1. OPERA: One operatic aria in the original language and key.
2. EUROPEAN ART SONG: One composition from the standard 18th, 19th, or 20th Century
art song literature by such composers as (but not limited to) Brahms, Schubert, Schumann,
Strauss, Wolf, Debussy, Duparc, Faure, Respighi, Donaudy, Scarlatti, etc.
3. AFRICAN-AMERICAN ART SONG: Each contestant must sing one art song composed by
an African American composer. Songs can be obtained from the following sources:
Anthology of Art Songs by Black Composers, compiled and edited by Willis Patterson,
publ. Hall Leonard Publishers; The Second Anthology of Arts Songs compiled, edited and
published by Willis Patterson, 1525 Stonehaven, Ann Arbor, MI 48104; Art Songs and
Spirituals by Contemporary African American Composers by Donna Cox and Kathy M
Bullock; or A New Anthology of Art Songs by African American Composers by Jeannie
Wagner and Margaret R. Simmons additional literature may be founds at The African
American Art Song Alliance (http://www.darryltaylor.com/alliance/) or Videmus
(http://www.videmus.org/ ). Substitutions can be made of art songs by other African
American composers, but they should be of the same difficulty.
4. NEGRO SPIRITUAL: Each contestant must sing one Negro Spiritual set by such
composers as (but not limited to) Hall Johnson, H.T. Burleigh, John Work, Jr., R. Nathaniel
Dett, Edward Boatner, Charles Lloyd, Mark Fax, Uzee Brown, Moses Hogan, and others.
Published collections of spirituals by these composers and others are available, or can be
ordered in most music stores.
