ACLS Preparation Objectives
This section is intended to give students unfamiliar with the American Heart Association 2010
Advanced Cardiac Life Support standards the opportunity to apply previously learned EKG,
pharmacology, and medicine knowledge in a setting similar to the course.
Upon completion of this unit of instruction, the Physician Assistant student should be able to:
1. Relate the limb and chest leads of a 12 lead electrocardiogram (EKG/ECG) to the
respective area of the heart that lead emphasizes.
2. Relate the limb and chest leads of a 12 lead EKG to the coronary artery distribution
of the heart.
3. Apply current American Heart Association (AHA) recommendations for treatment
of the following arrhythmias and conditions based upon current ACLS guidelines
given an EKG tracing and a patient scenario:
A. Atrial fibrillation and flutter
B. Pulseless ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation
C. Supraventricular tachycardia
D. Coronary artery syndromes including ischemia, ST-elevation myocardial
infarction (STEMI) and Non-STEMI situations
E. Asystole and Pulseless Electrical Activity (PEA)
F. First, Second, and Third degree heart blocks
4. Differentiate between synchronized cardioversion and defibrillation, including when
each one is indicated and utilized.
5. Identify when chest compressions should be utilized
6. Identify when advanced airway techniques would be utilized
7. Take part in a simulated Megacode practice situation, including acting as the team
leader
Adult cardiac arrest (includes asystole, PEA, VF, pulseless VT)
Tachycardia (PSVT and Ventricular, with pulse)
Symptomatic Bradycardia
