Focusing on the article about viscosity (page 9), Id like to highlight which actions we should

take in designing heat exchangers with viscous flows with large bulk to wall viscosity ratio
which affects heat transfer as detailed in the article. Typical case is for high-viscosity-liquids
(high viscosity --> low Re --> low htc --> large bulk to wall temperature ratio --> large bulk to
wall viscosity ratio).
In case of cooling, an underestimation of the wall viscosity may lead to an overestimation of
the heat transfer coefficient, then to items underdesigned.
When inputting process data with the user defined data input method, usually we have fluid
properties at inlet and outlet temperature only, while the wall temperature can be much lower
than the outlet temperature of the hot stream. HTRI can extrapolate the viscosity values
beyond input values, but they can be underestimated, resulting in items that will actually be
underdesigned.
To avoid this, we have to input the viscosity value of the high-viscosity-liquid at the inlet
temperature of the cooling medium. This can be easily done using the Grid Properties input
method.
In this way HTRI can correctly simulate boundary layer effects on the heat transfer
coefficient and we can obtain more reliable designs.
