Diabetic Emergencies

Hypoglycemia

Used to be called Insulin Shock

Its symptoms are: Being pale, Diaphoretic, Altered mental status, Sometimes
patient may vomit, BG <60mg/dl

Usual causes are: Changes in exercise, recent illnesses, missed meals.

Hyperglycemia
Signs and Symtoms

Always Urinating (Polyurea)

Always Hungry (Polyphagia

Always Thirsty (Polydipsia)

Dehydration

Vomiting

Loss of weight

Rapid and deep respiratins (Kussmaul Respirations)

Sweet odors coming fom patients breath or skin (Acetone smell)

This Emergency is usually seen in Type 1 Diabetics

Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic Nonketotic


Syndrome
Signs and Symptoms

Patient does not experience anymore Acetonic smell and Kussmaul respirations
Always Urinating (Polyurea)

Always Hungry (Polyphagia

Always Thirsty (Polydipsia)

Seizures

Profound Dehydration

Coma

In this emergency the body has little insulin and is tying to eliminate the excess
sugar in the blood
