The Divination He Made Before Leaving Heaven
Owo ale e ba to'wuro jo. Owo ale o rein owuro.
Those were the, two Awos who made divination for Orunmila before he left
heaven for the
world. He was advised to make sacrifica to forestall the nefarious plans of
enemies. He was
required to make sacrifice with a bag containing all edible food-stuffs, sixty-
five thousand dollars,
crushed yam, small chicken, anda three-piece kolanut. He was also told to
serve his guardian
angel with a ram, cock and tortoise. He was also told to serve Ogun with
cock, tortoise, roasted
yarn, palm wine and palm frond. Immediately betore leaving tor earth, he
was required to obtain
God's blessings with white pigeon, white cloth, white kolanuts, coconut and
red parrot's feather.
After making all the sacrifices, he left tor earth.
During his joumey to the earth, he met Esu on the way, who queried him for
daring to leave
for earth without obtaining clearance from him. He replied that he was not
told at divination to
serve him. Esu however insjsted that he was not going to allow him to
proceed on his earthbound
joumey without getting a he-goat f;-om him.Ogunda-Ofun eventually
retumed to heaven
to Esu, after narrating his experience to the two Awos who made divination
for him. They apologizedto him for not telling him to serve Esu in the first instance. He eventually
served Esu with a
he-goat, white cloth, palm oil, rat, fish and a new pot.
After eating his food, Esu offeredto eseort him to earth, during which Esu
told him that he
was golng to be a proficient and famous Ifa priest, but warned that his
sucCess was going to
generate tremendous animosity against him unless he joined other Awos to
be holding meetings
in order to understand and emulate their methodology.
On getting to the wOrld, he started with initial success, but his fame and
fortune soon began
to generate envy and the Awos he met on earth started using the power of
witchcraft to obstruct
his work. One day, Esu reminded him that he had made no sacrifice since
coming to earth. He
advised him to make a feast for people with a goal. He made the feast at
which some of his
invitees expressed appreciation by telling him that they thought his success
would endure by
ignoring them. Before dispersing, the invitees told him to be present at their
meeting that night.
Incidentally, his swom enemies did not participate in the feast. Also absent
was his own wife who,
unknown to him, belonged to the club of witchcraft.
It was Esu who again directed him to do something about his principal
enemies who were
obstructing his work. Esu however asked for his own he-goat at that poin!
and it was given to
him. Thereafter, Esu disclosedthe identities of his principal enemies as
comprising: the handmaid
of Orisa; the handmaid of Oshun/Olokun; and the handmaid of the divinity
of death. Esu advised
him to produce a big gourd of palm wine tor him to use, which he quickly
made available.
Ogunda~Otun attended that night's meeting of the club of withcraft where
he discovered hiswife to be a prominent member. Orisa, Olokun and Death all torbid wine. As
soon as the meeting
was fully gathered, Esu pretended to have inadvertently broken the gourd
of palm wine and the
smell drove away the three divinities from the meeting. Thereafter,
Orunmila was formally initiated
as a member of the club and he was told that the meeting would be held
°nhis house on
every eighth day. Thereafter, his prosperity began to blossom and he lived
to a ripe old age. At
the height of his prosperity, he made a large feast with.a cow, goat and
rams to which he invited
his Awos and sang in their praise. At that stage, he served his Ifa with
acock, since he was
already ~ witch himself. It will be mentioned that only witches serve their Ifa
with cock.
When this Ifa appears at Ugbodu, immediate steps should be taken to
prepare the Esu
shine of the Ifa. The person will be told that his wife is a witch and that
circumstances are likely
to ma.k. e him become one himse.If. He should make sacrifice to be able to
withstand and over~
come the evil machinations of his enemies, who are nothappy about his
fame and fortune

There is a take away here in this essay, which probably no one is

warning to the populace of changing their evil ways. However, the last thing
that any of us are deliberating, is that Ifa and Orisa are asking each person
reading this essay, to have less timidity and more courage, to look within
their own spirit and mind; consequently asking the bigger question with a
statement, | am the one who is the liar, | am the one who is wicked, or | am
the one who is treacherous .
