What is a Chinese junk?

• A Chinese junk is a type

 
of boat used to carry food
from one city to
another.Although larger
junks made world wide
trips. Later on                           
in history
they were used as war
ships.     
 Who made them?
• The junk boats were originally used by the
Song dynasty from 960-1270. Then from
1271 to 1368 a Mongol emperor build the
first Chinese imperial treasure fleet. These
junks sailed to many places including
southern India.
What are they made of?
• Chinese junks were
made of bamboo. It
was made of bamboo
because bamboo is
fairly strong. Also
because bamboo floats
easily .
 How big are they?
• Chinese Junks were
regularly 492 feet
long.( 150 meters)
Also junks had a lot of
cabins for the crew.
They regularly had 3
masts.
 Are they still used today?
• As a matter of fact Chinese junks are used
today by families in China. Believe it or not
they use it as a source for making money,
by transporting foods.
