Reflection of Teaching Young Learners

My group decided to teach young learners in a foundation in North Jakarta. The
students come from various grades but most of them come from third grade of elementary
school. There was one student who is actually still in kindergarten and one student who is
currently in second grade of elementary school. We followed the rule and regulation from the
foundation, including the topic we taught. Based on the textbook used by students, we should
teach three things, those are many, dozen, and half dozen. Yet, we decided to erase many
because it is not in line with the topic that we taught.
We prepared the lesson plan for one hour but in the implementation, we could only
teach around 35 minutes. It happened because we honestly came late because we had TOEFL
test in campus. After finishing TOEFL test in campus at 3.30 PM, we immediately went to
North Jakarta. We actually needed to teach students at 5 PM but we could get there around 5.
20 PM. Were sorry for this inconvenience so we cannot teach young learners for the time
period you expected.
I personally learnt a lot from the teaching yesterday. I can say that it was fun but
somehow it was very tiring to handle the kids. Some of them are so cute and good students
but the rest just like monsters. The kids tend to move a lot, they barely can sit down. It was
hard to get their attention because they talked each other. I was in charge in opening and
leading in part. I did what written in the lesson plan such as opened the class, asked their
condition, and reviewed the previous lesson. Yet, I think that I did not maximize the use of
objects existed in the classroom. When I reviewed the previous lesson about half, quarter, and
whole, I should give the real example of it but I did not. In giving the example of half, it
would be better if I could show them a piece of paper and then I cut it in the middle so that it
can be a half.
I actually wanted to know their name one by one but I think about time availability so
I decided to know their name during the lesson. Over all, I am grateful because I could
experience to teach young learners because this was my first experience. The thing I want to
say is I need to prepare myself, physically and mentally to handle the kids because they are
unpredictable in a way of learning. I need to provide more plans if plan A did not work so
teaching and learning process can be undertaken smoothly. Time management also still
becomes my concern because if we are not able to manage time well, students will not get
what we actually intend them to get.
