Math 35 (Advanced Calculus) focuses on two very important
topics basic to both pure and applied mathematics.
1.Fourier analysis, which expresses very general functions in terms of trig functions, and often provides the key to understanding basic features of functions in both theory and practice. (All kinds of spectroscopy is a good example). The first thing is to state very carefully they main theorem for Fourier series, and learn how to manipulate the formulas and calculate Fourier coefficients. This involves extensive use of basic integral calculus (integration by substitution and by parts), which will be briefly reviewed. There are different variants of the basic picture which have to be considered. And we will actually give a pretty good proof of this theorem! This will take up about half of the term. 2.An equally huge and important subject is the theory of some basic partial differential equations which occur in science, engineering , statistics, economics. We will only give an introduction to this fundamental subject of pure and applied mathematics, focusing on the heat (or diffusion) equation and the wave equation, mainly in just the one dimensional case. The important thing is to solve such equations given both initial and boundary conditions.\, and this can be a complicated subject. Some familiarity with ordinary differential equations and scientific applications could be helpful, but is not necessary: we will develop a simple rough picture of this from scratch. In fact it turns out that Fourier analysis is the key to solving some very basic and interesting equations of this sort, describing things like heat propagation or vibration in a wire, which is our main focus, and in a way is the first step in understanding a great tradition of applied mathematics used in physics engineering and elsewhere. We may also talk about the Fourier integral (an analogue of Fourier series) for a week or so, and if it seems right for this class talk a little about the theory of distributions (the Dirac delta function) in an intuitive way.
