Fish Nets - A Brief History and Classification
Fish Nets - A Brief History and Classification
Classification
The first evidence of the usage of fish nets by humans date back to
8300 BC. These fish nets, referred to as the nets of Antrea,
discovered in the Karelian town of Antrea, were made from the
branches of the willow tree. Many other archaeological expeditions
have revealed the usage of fish nets in the ancient world. For
example, Native American Indians used Red tackle box woven from
the fibres of spruce roots or wild grass and tied stones to the net to
use it as a weight. The Nile River in Egypt was a rich source of fish
and ancient Egyptians carried out fishing extensively in the waters of
the Nile using fish nets. The mention of fish nets occurs in Egypt,
Greek and Roman art and literature. In Egyptian tombs, paintings of
early forms of fish nets are clearly depicted. Ancient Greek author
Ovid mentions the use of fish nets in Greece in his writing,
Halieutica. Roman mosaics also exhibit pictures of fish nets used
by the ancient Roman civilization.
