FUN ANd MaNipuLatives iN the Music Classroom Down to the Bakers Sho} Focus: Form, Movement, M-R-D, Melodic Direction, Form Teach the song. Students clap on each “hop” while they learn the melody. Discuss form as.a class. Ask students to stand, sing and move on the ‘hops.’ Choose one child to be the chef (they can wear an apron). Give them a large mixing bowl. Prepare some flashcards of baked goods and write movement ‘words on each card (we used cookie cut-outs). Place cards in the mixing bowl. After each time singing the song, the chef chooses a new student to pick a card/cookie out of the mixing bowl. (Examples for movement: skip, twirl, tiptoe, fly, wiggle, walk backwards, skate, roll, crawl, hop, jump, swim, etc.) **1n addition you can have a few students with “baker's shakers” to shake on the hops. Sandwich box with rice inside and taped together makes an easy baker's shaker!!! (You can find the music to this song in our new NEISD music curriculum bundle. See GAMEPLAN 3, pg.4) Cookie Sheets Although this easily goes along with ‘Down to the Baker's Shop’, there are a whole host of purposes for these cookie sheets. Students can use cookie sheets and magnets to show melodic direction, display how many sounds a beat, and show place notes ona staff. If you do not want to get cookie sheets, just make the paper visuals, laminate a class set, and use poker chips or bingo chips in place of magnets! Music Fly Swatter This one is easy! Cut a whole ina fly swatter. Decorate if you'd like. You can have students use it to locate important symbols in the music on smartboard or wherever! Examples: Can you find the treble clef? Can you find the time signature? Can you find the measure number? Ete. ‘Get to know you’ Beach Ball Write music questions on a beach ball. Play “Wipe Out” or your favorite beach song. Students pass the ball around the room. When the music stops whoever is holding the beach ball answers a music question *We really enjoyed the Artie and Denise Theme and Variations summer workshop! We highly recommend attending if you have the chance...high energy, lots of fun and you learn so much! IF you have any questions or want to know more you can contact us...
