Power Supplies

(Voltage Regulators)
19.1 INTRODUCTION
-The present chapter introduces the operation of power supply circuits built using rectifiers, filters, and then
voltage regulators

19.2 GENERAL FILTER CONSIDERATIONS

1. Filter Voltage Regulation and Ripple Voltage
2. VOLTAGE REGULATION
3. RIPPLE FACTOR OF RECTIFIED SIGNAL

Filter Voltage Regulation and Ripple Voltage

-happens after filtering.

-The smaller the ac variation with

respect to the dc level, the better

the filter circuits operation.
. VOLTAGE REGULATION

- Voltage change under no load condition and with load condition.

Example:

RIPPLE FACTOR OF RECTIFIED SIGNAL

-compare two rectified signal the half wave and full wave.

Half wave rectified signal

Full wave rectified signal

-full wave has larger dc and less ripple voltage.

Equation of Vr(rms):
Vr(rms)=

[V

( rms )V 2dc ]

For half wave rectified signal:

Vdc= 0.318Vm
Vr(rms) = 0.385Vm

For full wave rectified signal:

Vdc = 0.636Vm
Vr(rms) = 0.308Vm
